Attention, open in a new window. PDFPrintE-mail

Natonal_Volunteer_Week-Award_Recipients

United Way, together with our member agencies, were pleased to recognize several volunteers at a reception hosted by Investors Group on Thursday, April 22nd. Shown having accepted their Outstanding Volunteer Awards are from left to right; Fredericton Homeless Shelters volunteer Shelley Robarts, Oromocto SPCA volunteer Susan Sears, CPA (NB) Inc., Fredericton SPCA volunteer Marg Scammell, Steph Fox, Director of Community Development with United Way (Central N.B.) Inc., CNIB volunteer Bob Lockhart, Jobs Unlimited volunteer Al Lacey. Chris Martin, a volunteer with NBACL was also an award recipient but not present in photo.

Read on to learn what makes each of these volunteers so outstanding!

Shelley Robarts-Nominated by Brian Duplessis, Executive Director, Fredericton Homeless Shelters

Shelley has been on the Board of Directors of the Fredericton Homeless Shelters for nearly ten years. She has served in a number of capacities, chairing committees, serving on the Executive and currently holds the position of Secretary.

But Shelley's contribution goes far beyond Board responsibilities. She co-chaired the Kiwanis run event "More Than Martinis" for several years and continues to serve on the organizing committee this year. There is virtually no event that Shelley doesn't help with - selling tickets on draws, spending hours at the Market and Regent Mall selling our Buy A Night cards, deeply involved with the silent auction for FLASH, and the list goes on.....

Shelley also works for X-Wave and doesn`t hesitate to contribute her expertise whenever we have a computer problem. When an employee who handles our administrative duties fell ill earlier this year, Shelley was the first one to offer to spend her lunch hours picking up the slack.

Susan Sears-Nominated by Kari Poore, Oromocto SPCA, Executive Director

Susan Sears has been volunteering for us for 5 years. She sat on our Board of Directors as Vice President during the very busy time of us transitioning from our old shelter to our new current shelter. Susan was a hands-on volunteer, from helping to clear the land, to fundraising to ensure that we had the funds for our new building. She was heavily involved in getting things set up and prepared for our grand opening.

Susan and her husband Willy, also volunteer to transport all of the donated recyclables to the redemption centre as a way of fundraising. In just 2 short years, the total amount of money that Susan and her husband have brought into the shelter is over $5000. Susan also takes on the task of coordinating all of the information needed to go in our quarterly newsletter.  Without volunteers like Susan, our shelter would not run as smoothly. She is a valued member of our team and we are so grateful for all the work she does for us.

Chris Martin-Nominated by Alex Leblanc, NBACL, Independent Facilitator

Chris Martin is 22 years old, and has lived through a lot in his young life.  At the age of nine, Chris was taken into the care of the minister.  During the next decade, Chris moved in and out of 10 group homes.  He is very open about his experiences, because he wants people to understand what childhood looks like for so many young people.  Chris could be considered a self-advocate: he tells others about his experience; he stands up for what he believes in; and he lives his beliefs by always being ready to help others and by keeping a positive attitude.

Chris has many gifts and strengths, which shine very brightly.  This is why Chris is such a great messenger for persons with disabilities.  He enthusiastically shows people what he has done in his life, and that other people who have disabilities deserve opportunities like the ones he’s had.  Chris has been a huge asset to NBACL, the Fredericton Food Bank and the Boiestown Fire Dept over the past year.  Despite his many involvements, Chris is always keen to help out and get involved in new things.  Chris is a model volunteer and a leader in our community.

Bob Lockhart-Nominated by Mark McIntosh, CNIB, Volunteer Services Coordinator

Bob Lockhart is a fifth-generation New Brunswicker with a broad background in broadcasting and cablevision. In 2007, he was elected to the CAB National Broadcasting Hall of Fame. He is currently active in not-for-profit activities with the New Brunswick Division of CNIB and National Vice-Chair of the National Broadcast Reading Service for disabled persons in Toronto

CNIB has benefited in many ways from Bob’s enthusiastic involvement with us.  Every once in a while a volunteer comes along who fits so seamlessly into your organization that he makes an impact in many areas of your work.  In Bob’s case, with his communications background, he has been adept at raising the profile of CNIB in the community.  He is never far away with camera in hand, at any CNIB event whether it be a small open house or a Gala event.  Bob has been instrumental in opening doors for CNIB as the co-Chair of our Government Relations Committee and his assistance with the Right to Read Advocacy campaign contributed greatly to its huge success in New Brunswick.  Bob doesn’t limit his contribution to communications and advocacy, he’s first in line to assist with our transportation needs or fundraising activities as well.

Bob is currently a graduate student at UNB in Fredericton where he is pursuing a PhD in history, but still he has been active with CNIB since 2003.  Bob says he considers himself privileged to be part of the CNIB team; we feel privileged that he has chosen to work with us these past 7 years and hope he chooses to stay involved for many more.

Al Lacey-Nominated by Abdel Belhadjsalah, Jobs Unlimited, Executive Director.

Al served on our Board since 1993 and filled positions ranging from Treasurer to chairman and regular Board member. Al has always been dedicated. His  attendance of board and committee meetings  is  almost perfect. Al volunteered on a number of initiatives and always put creative and audacious ideas on the table. His concern about the clients we serve and their wellbeing is always brought to the forefront of discussions and was kept as the main focus.

Al also served as the United way campaign chair for a number of years.

Marg Scammell-Nominated by Jen Eastwood, Fredericton SPCA, Shelter Coordinator

Marg has been a sted-fast volunteer with the Fredericton SPCA for over15 years. Marg comes to the Fredericton SPCA twice a week to take care of our recycling, so not only does she help us, but she also helps the environment! Marg's dedication is a huge reason we were able to be awarded the Green Shops Gold Medal award on our first assessment.

During the past 3 weeks due to medical reasons Marg has been unable to volunteer with us....it has really highlighted the importance of her work here, and given us a realistic view of the job we create with our recycling and how lucky we are to have Marg. We cannot wait for her return in next week!

In addition to helping the environment by recycling our bottles and cans Marg also collects the revenue generated from their return and brings those funds to the shelter for projects that we may have for the animals.

Marg is a truly wonderful person, and we would be, and have been these past weeks, lost without her. She deserves this nomination and to win through her unfailing commitment to the Fredericton SPCA and the environment.

Chris Aalders-Nominated by Haley Flaro, CPA (NB) Inc., Executive Director

Chris is an incredible ambassador for people with mobility-related disabilities and he has been committed to raising awareness of disabilities since his work-related injury in 2004. Chris has shared his personal story with others in venues such as the Stories component of our web site, as a keynote speaker at our annual Art and Antique Auction and at United Way events. Chris was also featured in two Daily Gleaner articles - a May 2, 2008 article on accessibility and a June 14, 2008 Father's Day full-page feature. Chris was nominated for this contest by his wife Cristin and two sons - Logan and Griffin. In this article, Cristin reflected, "He transports both of our boys to worlds where mobility doesn't matter." Chris also recently shared his personal story in an innovative radio advertising campaign piloted in the Fredericton, Woodstock, Grand Falls and Bathurst areas to help promote CPA ‘s vocational services to people with mobility-related conditions. He is also our 2010 Ambassador of the Fredericton Wheels in Motion event to be held in June.

Chris also makes outstanding contributions in the community with respect to sports and recreation. Chris is the President of the Elm City Wheelchair Basketball Sports Club and he has started up a youth wheelchair basketball group in Fredericton. He has also served as a coach with the Easter Seals Abilities Program. He also plays on an “A” Division basketball team, the Fredericton All Courts, who have won the Maritime Wheelchair Basketball League 7 times over the last 10 years. They placed 2nd this year and placed 2nd in the Canadian Wheelchair Basketball League in 2009.

Chris is a true ambassador and a valued member of the CPA (N.B.) team. His energy and kindness are a continual inspiration.

Oromocto Food Bank-Great things come in small packages; thank you Savannah!

Attention, open in a new window. PDFPrintE-mail

We had a nine year old girl by the name of Savannah do a big food drive for the Oromocto Food Bank on Halloween night. She made her own flyers, and took them around to her community days before hand, so people would be ready for her when she got to their house.

I know first hand from working at the food bank, just how much work goes into putting an event like this together. It is so wonderful to see a young lady like Savannah getting involved with giving back to the community. We received the food on Nov the 2nd from Savannah’s mother Pam, as Savannah was in school. She made a donation of 276 items. She went door to door to pick up every item personally, and say a big thank you to anyone that gave.

I have yet to meet Savannah in person, but am looking so forward to that day. Talk about an asset to her community.

Sincerely,

We had a client who had utilized our services for many years. The client faced many challenges, was living on Disability, Income Assistance and had difficulty making ends meet.

In March of 2009, she came into the Fredericton Food Bank for the final time, and thanked everyone for their tireless efforts on behalf of those who use their services by providing encouragement, help and food for people like her.

As a result of her age, she qualified for the “Young Age Pension” and was delighted that she could now have some independence by being able to meet her financial obligations, have money left over to support herself and provide the necessities of life.

Susan's Story

Attention, open in a new window. PDFPrintE-mail

Susan was a 50 year old woman who had a life long history of mental illness, primarily depression.  She experienced great difficulty in finding and keeping a job due to the nature of her illness.  As a result of not working for many years, her financial condition deteriorated and she was required to apply for social assistance.  At the time of the first contact with CMHA, she was living with a friend for only a few days and had no money for food, accommodation, travel or medications.  Because she also suffered from paranoia, she was suspect of government and very anxious with the whole process of applying for “handouts” as she described help.  Prior to her illness, she was a capable professional and lost not only her financial and social supports, but her family and her own self esteem as the illness progressed.  She felt and was very alone.

Through contact with the Canadian Mental Health Association’s Advocacy Program, we were able to attend all government meetings and support her through the process.  Through our many resources, we managed to find affordable housing, food and much needed winter clothing. She was connected to adequate mental health resources and received her medication.  Today, she is working part time, with the support and regular follow up of our programs.  Susan is only one of close to one hundred people helped by this program with many life threatening issues.  The United Way’s continuing support over the past several decades ensures its success.
